Jewellery from the Victorian Era (1837-1901) contained symbols that expressed a sentiment or meaning that the wearer wanted to convey. Common motifs were flowers, hearts, animals, buckles and knots and each was a symbol for a broader, often sentimental meaning. The buckle was a symbol of the binding love between the giver and the wearer and was popularized during the reign of Queen Victoria in keeping with Queen Victoria's Order of the Garter.
