A rare antique Pique bangle from the Victorian era, c1880! Made of tortoiseshell and gold inlay, this antique bangle is a wonderful example of 19th century Pique art form. The Pique art form is meticulously hand inlaid into the rich brown tortoiseshell and the ornate Pique pattern consists of a scallopped central design which is bordered by a band and zig-zag diamond design. The oval bangle itself is composed of two halves which are riveted to a plain piece of tortoiseshell on the inside and combined by a (later) elastic insert. The construction allowing for a versatile fit over the hand.
The bangle measures 20mm (2cm) wide x 6.50mm height and approx 16cm around the inside (closed size).
Video of the bangle can be viewed here: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/hRi1_77PuwI
The pique artisan-ship is the minute bits of gold which were generally 9ct gold or higher delicately inlaid into the tortoiseshell with heat applied - a now lost decorative art dating to the 17th and 18th century, then later into the 19th century revived and seen in jewellery.
A stunning looking bangle on the wrist. Easily blending with todays styles, coupled with other gold bangles or worn alone!

The antique bangle presents in good condition. There is a small amount of Pique loss at the ends and a small amount of inner tortoishell has come away near one rivet. Albeit, doesn't impact on the soundness of the design |
