A wonderful carved Whitby jet brooch from the Victorian era, c1880! This good-sized oval shaped brooch features a three dimensional relief carving depicting a beautiful leaves and grapes scene. It is further adorned by a decorative entwined 'Celtic' design. On the back of the piece is the original stylized brass bar with long pin and c-loop connection.
In the Victorian secret language of floriography the grapes along with leaves was often associated with birth/rebirth, abundance & charity with regard to Christianity.
The piece originates from England, and Whitby jet is from the English seaside town of Whitby. It is a fossilized wood from the ancient monkey puzzle tree. Jet from the Whitby region is said to be the best quality due to it's tough density and high sheen. Jet was popularized by Queen Victorian who wore only black mourning jewellery following the death of her beloved husband Prince Albert in 1861.

The condition of the antique brooch is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, the Whitby jet presents in excellent order with no 'nibbles' sighted, and the original pin works well with good tension. Overall, superb for her age! |
