A spectacular antique paste dragonfly brooch from the Victorian era, c1900! Made of silver gilt this stunning and decorative brooch depicts a good-sized dragonfly which is embellished with dazzling hand-cut French paste stones and garnet top doublet stones.
The brooch has a wonderful 3-dimensional look with double wings featuring artful piercing, textured antennas, and legs which form below with split feet... all portraying life like details. Traveling down the centre 'abdomen' is a row of bright pinkish red garnet top doublet stones (one replacement paste) and two larger white paste stones rest in the 'thorax'. Two pinkish red garnet top doublet stones represent each of the dragonfly's eyes, and the wings are lined with bright hand cut French paste stones which twinkle with every move!
A pin and c-connection attach to the back. There is remnants of gilding, albeit this has faded overtime and appears more silver at a quick glance. A tiny stamp can be seen to the c-connection and pin, undecipherable but likely European.
The brooch measures 5.20cm long x 6.60cm span.
