An artful and very shimmering vintage butterfly wing brooch from the Art Deco era, c1920's! Made of .920 silver, this beautiful brooch depicts a lady in a crinoline dress and bonnet carrying a fan in luminous blue-aqua to purplish-blue natural morpho tropical butterfly wing amongst fine handpainted artwork. The wonderful scene sits behind a dome clear glass or hard plastic and is bordered by a bamboo decorated bezel. A pin and c-loop attaches to the back. Stamped 'B&S' over 'RIO' and .920, the brooch, or butterfly wing likely originates from Brazil, South America, denoted by the RIO stamp. Butterfly wing art was a popular indigenous art form in Brazil and other parts of South America, it continued popularity and surged when English company Thomas L Mott started producing the little works of art.
The brooch measures 4.80cm long x 3.20cm wide.

The vintage brooch presents in excellent condition. Besides general surface wear and patina, the delicate artwork itself appears intact with no pealing or damage to the wing. Clasp works well with firm tension. A wonderful vintage brooch! |
