An exquisite antique shell cameo brooch from the Victorian era, c1860! Made of gold gilt or often referred to as pinchbeck, this sensational large cameo depicts the King of Gods, Zeus. The sensational hand carved cameo is exquisitely detailed in every sense; his realistic life look appearance and expression is regal and fierce, not to mention his curled strands of hair such finely detailed.
Testament to this fine cameo brooch is the hand inscribed signature to the back of the cameo shell, signed J Mouhe. J Mouhe was a 19th century French cameo carver. French classical carvers are highly valued, and this carving is no exception.
The cameo rests in a bezel collet with a bold yet beautiful artistic frame of half loops, and there are three hand engraved scrolls interspaced along the top. A metal pin and C loop attaches at the back.
The brooch measures 6.50cm height x 5.90cm width, and cameo measures 4.80mm height x 4.10mm width.
