A wonderful antique Montrose agate brooch from the Victorian era, c1880! Made of sterling silver the good-sized antique brooch pays homage to the British heraldic Order of Garter motif and is beautifully decorated with Montrose agate segments all the way around. The three - dimensional and unique open oval-shaped piece features striking blue-gray banded agate stones which originate from Scotland's renowned Montrose agate-bearing coastline in the 19th century. Hence the name of this particular stone that is so unique to this form of agate! Ornate hand chasing adorn the silver surface, adding further texture and charm to this wonderful Victorian piece. A pin and c-loop attach to the back, along with a loop and ring if you wish to wear the piece as a pendant.
Size of the piece measures 6.50cm (2 & 1/2") side to side 6.00cm (2 & 1/4") height.

The condition of the brooch is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, the stones are all undamaged and secure, engraving retains a crispness, and the original pin works well with good tension. Overall, superb for her age! |
