A beautiful antique Scottish brooch from the Victorian era, c1860! Made of sterling silver, the charming open and stylized oval design features a central cross and is adorned with agate segments, paste stones and ornate hand engraved patterns to the silver surface. Four Scottish agate inlays interspace along the oval border - two reddish brown agates which are likely carnelian or jasper stones, and two banded agates; all native to the Scottish mountains and mined in the 19th century! Three paste stones rest in closed-back collets with foiling behind, adding a magical gleam at every turn! The raised budded cross has open arms and is entirely hand chased, including a star pattern surrounding the orange paste stone. An original pin and c-loop clasp attaches to the back, along with a safety chain and pin. In character to many 19th century Scottish pieces, no hallmarks or stamps are sighted to the piece, tests indicate sterling silver.
Size of the brooch measures 6.20cm (2 & 1/2") side to side x 5.10cm (2") height
