It doesn't get more Australian than this! Here is a wonderful piece of Australian history, crafted in 9ct gold with a lovely two-tone bloomed finish, this early 1900's pendant depicts the map of Australia within a lovely shield like frame, complemented on a 9ct rose gold 24" belcher link necklace.

The front of the pendant is hand engraved with AUSTRALIA and lines denoting state borders, as well there are small random etches near the edges which perhaps denotes certain rivers. There is something else which I might add (if you haven't already observed?) there is no border between the states of South Australia and Northern Territory, as well Victoria and New South Wales. This is because NT was once part of SA up until 1911, and VIC was once part of NSW! Also, it appears the island state of Tasmania has been forgotten about (once again!).  A small ring and sturdy 9ct gold jump ring are placed at the top.

A crisp set of stamps can be seen to the reverse of the pendant revealing the maker which is that of one of Australia's largest iconic 20th century jewellery firms, Willis & Co, and later Willis & Sons. Stamped with their standard marks a 'unicorn' '9' and 'W' which was used after 1904.

Patriotic jewellery was made to commemorate the Federation of Australia (also known as the Commonwealth of Australia) that was formed on 1st January 1901. Many stick pins, brooches and pendants were made to commemorate this special event.

The pendant measures 3.30cm total length with jump and 2.60cm max width. The necklace measures 24" (60cm) length.

A charming piece of Australian history, perhaps to add to a collection, or as a gift to the travelling tourist!
