An exquisite antique statement necklace from the Victorian era, c1885! Made of sterling silver with rose gold appliqués to the locket, this stunning necklace is comprised of a beautifully engraved book chain and decorative rectangular locket - the striking and artful design embraced from the Aesthetic period.
The hand engraving depicts birds and geometric patterns, and alternates with polished scalloped circular links. A large original bolt ring clasp secures the chain and carries further front links, a smaller bolt ring and locket.
The functioning bolt ring clasps allowing for versatile styling.
Adorning the front of the locket is a hand engraved crane bird and foliage, along with applied rose gold appliqués - the charming scene typical of the wonderful Aesthetics movement evoked from Japanese art. Inside the locket reveals a hand engraved name 'Jean Wright' (perhaps the original owner!?) and another difficult to dechipher to opposite side. A large rounded bail attaches to the top. Both the chain and locket test sterling silver - the necklace is stamped "STERLING SILVER" to one end.
The length of the necklace measures 45cm (17 & ¾") long, and the front drop measures 10.50m (4") long. Locket measures 5.40cm long including bail and 2.70cm wide.
