A wonderful antique operculum necklace from the Victorian era, c1900! Made of sterling silver with gilt finish, this lavalier style necklace is composed of four operculum shell gallery links on an original cable chain with a larger operculum pendant suspended from bars at the front.
The operculum shells display striking ombre like patterns of deep forest green, white, orange, through to brownish orange. The operculum shells rest in low gallery claw collets with a closed back to the largest pendant.
Stamped "STL SILVER" to the reverse of the largest link. The necklace tests sterling silver and the surface yellow gilding has a nice aged appearance, giving a lovely antiquity look. An original barrel 'tube' clasp securely fastens the necklace.
Wearable length of the necklace is 42.50cm or just under 17" inches - it does appear to be lengthened at the back neck at some stage. Width of the operculum links is 1.30cm and 2.30cm for the largest.

Operculum is a certain type of freshwater marine snail, and it is said to have been one of the oddest materials found in Victorian jewellery, and beyond. While the snail is alive the operculum is a flexible membrane, but afterwards it hardens and becomes a calcareous 'seashell'. The pattern resembles an eye-like appearance, which is why it's sometimes referred to as cat's eye or shiva's eye.
A most unique piece of antique jewellery, perfect for the nature loving lady!
