A beautiful English antique locket from the Victorian era, c1880! Made of sterling silver with rose gold appliqués, this stunning rectangular design locket is meticulously hand decorated with a charming bird scene - the artful design embraced from the Japonesque Aesthetic movement.
Adorning the front of the locket is a bird (perhaps a crane or heron) standing among water and reeds, along with bamboo foliage. The scene is framed by curved rose gold appliqués and a checked engraved pattern is placed at each corner. There is remnants of yellow gold gilding and darkened oxidization to the bird, adding further contrast to the delightful scene. The back and bevelled edges are polished, and the original rounded tapered bail attaches to the top. Inside the locket bears the original inner frames and a paper mache like backing to one side.
English hallmarks to the reverse reveal the locket is of Chester origin and year 1880 manufacture. There is also a maker's mark "M.J.G" which is that of Birmingham maker Michael Joseph Goldsmith.
The locket measures 5.80cm long including bail, 2.80cm wide and 1.00cm thick

The antique locket presents in very good condition. Besides normal surface wear and a couple minute dents, the locket presents, overall, very well for its 144-year age. A wonderful antique piece! |
