This exquisite antique intaglio opaline glass ring, dating from the late Edwardian era circa 1915, is a striking piece of jewellery crafted by the early South Australian, Adelaide jewellery firm H.R Christian (1912-1943). Made from 9ct rosy-yellow gold, the ring features a striking 18.40mm x 16.20mm iridescent opaline glass adorned with a double eagle head intaglio, set in an intricate coronet claw style setting that enhances its elegance.

The translucent opaline glass exhibits a captivating light blue hue with pinkish-orange highlights. Opaline glass was popular in the 19th and early 20th century and was typically produced as the cheaper alternative to opals. Many opaline pieces were produced in cabochon form and intaglio opaline pieces are seldom encountered, making this one a bit special!

Making up the rest of the ring is a high dome 1.90mm wide shank which forms knife-edge shoulders that jut inward for a comfortable fit. Stamped with the makers marks 'H.R CHRISTIAN', '9c' and another, possibly a crown, which would make sense as many early Adelaide jewellers stamped their pieces with a crown mark.

The double-headed eagle is an iconographic symbol originating in the Bronze Age, and often symbolizes both material and spiritual powers working together.

Finger size of the ring measures J (Aus/UK) or 5 (USA).

The ring presents in very good antique condition. There is a small split to the underside of the setting which does not impose any structural danger to the setting, and small chip to opaline glass (difficult to see due to it being underneath claw). Otherwise, the ring is in very good order with stone securely set and facing up nicely
