A wonderful antique mourning brooch from the Victorian era, c 1870! The piece is cased in 9ct gold, a lovely subdued yellow hue with the words "IN MEMORY OF" serving as a fabulous example of 19th century mourning jewelry, also known as memento mori jewelry. The words are in ornate Gothic font which adds wonderful antiquity charm, and the gold words against the rich black enamel creates a striking look! At the centre of the brooch is a glass covered window, which reveals finely woven hair below, the memento of a lost loved one. Bordering the brooch is repoussé swirl work, which finishes the antique piece beautifully! To the back of the brooch is a metal pin and c-connection, along with a safety chain/pin for extra security.
Commensurate with the 150 year age, there is a small chip to the glass edge and minor enamel damage.
A gorgeous antique mourning brooch, it is rich in history and would be perfect for the avid Victorian collector!

The overall condition of the brooch is good. There is a small chip to the glass edge and minor enamel damage near the glass chip, this can be seen to the naked eye, though in my opinion doesn't detract from the overall aesthetics of the piece. The hair work is in excellent condition, retaining a tight woven appearance, with no frays or loosening. The pin still has plenty of tension. Overall in great condition for her age! A wonderful antique brooch! |
