This vesta case was used back in the late 1800's as a pocket match safe, it has a match 'striker' placed at the bottom. The front and back of this vesta case features a beautiful hand-engraved Art Nouveau pattern of elaborate swirls & flourishes to both the front and back. The engraving surrounds a scalloped edged cartouche to each side; one side bears the hand-engraved initials "G.H.B" whilst the other side is left un-monogrammed. The hinged lid closes firmly and the condition of this little antique treasure is excellent with no dents, nor damage i can spot.

A beautiful work of art in itself and today could be used for practicality, such as keeping your matches dry for camping/hiking or perhaps to add to your Object d'Art collection. The side ring attached gives an option to put onto a chain, .... i can envisage vesta on an old albert chain around the neck!

Hallmarks placed along the opening rim indicate this vesta case comes from England, Birmingham and was crafted in 1898 (118 years old!), the maker's initials "J.W" is that of John E Wilmot of once Hylton Street, Birmingham.
