A fun statement Australian black jade pendant necklace and earring set from the late 20th century, c1980!
The opaque and lustrous natural solid black jade is said to have been sourced near the small South Australian town of Cowell - known for the world's largest nephrite jade deposits! Natural black jade is a variety of nephrite jade, and the Australian black jade is also known as black nephrite jade, Cowell jade, or premium black nephrite.
The pendant comprises of a solid piece of black jade which is masterly hand-carved in an elongated open and undulated design which features a lovely fluted surface. A sterling silver hand wrought textured bail attaches to the top. The pendant suspends from a sterling silver 'hammered' 18"-long trace necklace, complementing nicely with the pendant!
The earrings comprise of two solid pieces of Australian black jade which are hand-carved in a open pentagon design with an elegant peaked base. The jade surface displays a gorgeous high polish with sleek rounded edges. A sterling silver hand wrought textured bail attaches to the top, and each suspends from hinged continental clips - allowing for a nice sway on the lobe!
