A beautiful shell cameo brooch from the Victorian era, c1870! Hand made of 9ct rose gold and likely made in the Grand Tour period, the unusual circular shape cameo depicts a quaint village scene. The picturesque scene in relief includes foliage and rocks, a bridge over water or river, cottages with smoke billowing chimneys, a tower with steeple, and a large tree with hills in the background. The charming scene really comes to life when light filters in from the reverse - very cleverly carved to incorporate the varying shell pigments which depicts a beautiful sunset or sunrise over the hills. Truly delightful! Still face up and in normal lighting conditions, the color of the carved scene is predominantly white with a tinge of peach background … and somewhat reminiscent of a 'white Christmas'! The cameo is framed and secured by a plain gold collet setting, handmade to suit the size and form of the cameo. An original pin, 'T' and c-loop clasp is attached to the back, as well as a safety chain and pin for extra security whilst wearing. The piece is unmarked but tests indicate 9ct rose gold.
