A fabulous antique Victorian Montrose agate brooch, hailing from Scotland from the late 19th century, c1880! Also known as Scottish pebble jewelry, the circular 'target' brooch is crafted in sterling silver and features beautiful Montrose agate segments inlaid into the design. The striking banded blue-gray colored agate stones originate from Scotland's renowned Montrose agate-bearing coastline in the 19th century. Hence the name of this particular agate that is so unique to this form of agate! The silver surface surrounding the agate stones is entirely adorned with hand engraved patterns. A 'Fleur-de-lis' hand engraved shaped section alternates in-between the agates, forming a lovely scalloped alike border … adding further charm to this wonderful Victorian piece. A pin and c-loop attach to the back. There is a hand inscription along the back of the brooch which appears to read "A Heany" in script; the name Heany is a surname of Irish origin and is said to translate to descendant of horseman. The brooch measures 4cm/1 & 1/2" across.

A superb piece of Scottish history which would add an impressive accessory to the scarf, lapel or wherever you desire to show it off. Charming!
