Antique Victorian Scottish Montrose Agate Maltese Cross Brooch

A small but fabulous antique Maltese cross brooch, hailing from Scotland from the late 19th century, c1880! Also known as Scottish pebble jewelry, the Maltese cross brooch is crafted in sterling silver and features beautiful Montrose agate segments inlaid into the design. The striking banded blue-gray colored agate stones originate from Scotland's renowned Montrose agate-bearing coastline in the 19th century. Hence the name of this particular agate that is so unique to this form of agate! The silver surface surrounding the agate stones is entirely adorned with hand engraved patterns. A pin and c-loop attach to the back. The brooch measures 3cm (1&1/4") across.
