A beautiful vintage Japanese Damascene butterfly brooch from the late Art Deco era, c1940! Made of brass and oxidized steel with 24k gold and silver highlights, this eye-catching butterfly features charming Japonesque scenes to both wings. The ornate scenes depict quaint villages with Mount Fuji and birds in the distance. The three-dimensional yellow-tone body of the butterfly features a textured surface with eyes, alike a real life butterfly and there are coiled wire 'antenna's' to the top. To the reverse is a pin and 'c' loop.
The detailed damascene workmanship is hand chiseled into the darkened metal (oxidized steel) and the 24k gold and silver is inlaid into the chiseled design, again by hand. The result is striking, alike wearing beautiful art or stories. The English 'Damascene' term comes from a perceived resemblance to the rich tapestry patterns of damask silk.
An alluring vintage butterfly brooch, perfect for the lady who appreciates unique handmade vintage jewellery!
