Interesting Facts

Vulcanite

Vulcanite was used to imitate jet in the Victorian mourning period. Vulcanite is essentially a rubber compound that has been hardened with chemicals and heat. It was discovered around 1839 and vulcanite was patented by Charles Goodyear in 1846. Vulcanite items can be highly polished black when manufactured but overtime the colour fade's to a dark brown and is accelerated if the vulcanite is continually exposed to strong light.
