A lovely antique pietra dura brooch, dating back to the 19th century, circa 1870! The eye is drawn to the beautiful floral design which is portrayed by green, white, orange and greenish/grey colour stone. The banded green stone foliage is named malachite. The floral design is inlaid into a black stone plaque. The stonework is assembled together precisely that the contact between each section is near to invisible - at quick glance it appears like a floral painting.
Surrounding the stone is an ornate repousse-like border; swirls and fan motifs embellish the edge and a patterned plate makes up the rest of border. Four interspaced granules further adorn the stone.
No stamps are sighted on brooch, tests indicated gold plated. A darker discolouration can be seen to the gold, mainly evident near corners of granules - howbeit consistent with the 140+ age. The darker appearance adding to its natural beauty and Victorian character! Pin and 'C' connection on the reverse .
A charming antique brooch which would make a stunning addition to the avid pietra dura collector ... or for the distinct antique brooch admirer!
