A beautifully carved cameo with striking detail! The Victorian cameo features white on chestnut brown sardonyx shell, the carved subject portraying a maenad or bacchante. A classical figure from Greek mythology, and said to be the female followers of the god of wine, Doinysus. The signature draped grapes and grape vine leaves mixed with tendrils of hair is beautifully carved, her facial features are strong and crisply carved.
A decorative 9ct yellow gold frame mounts the cameo. The border is etched with a zigzag pattern, giving a nice sheen when viewed at different angles. The cameo is raised and set into a gallery-type claw setting. Stamped "9c" to reverse. Pin and "C" connection, along with safety chain/pin completes the reverse.
