A charming antique MIZPAH brooch, dating back to Victorian era, c1890! The English, Birmingham hallmarked brooch is made in 9k yellow gold with a subtle rose hue. The darling double heart brooch features an abundance of quaint Victorian charm including floral and foliage accents, hand engraving and a granule decorated border. There is the words MIZPAH resting across one of the hearts, the opposite heart is hand engraved with the words "The lord watch between me & thee when we are absent one from another". A raised border surrounding words is decorated with hand engraving.

Mizpah jewellery found popularity during the Victorian era, and symbolized a bond of love between two people during a period of long separation, such as travel, military service or exploration (which was common in Victorian times!). The word Mizpah originates from the bible - Genesis 31, Verse 49, “And Mizpah; for he said, "The Lord watch between me and thee, when we are absent one from another" and meaning “watchtower” in Hebrew.

A darling piece of history steeped with endearing meaning. A perfect gift from a romantic at heart!
