A delightful antique Fede garnet & seed pearl ring from the Victorian era c1870! Made of 15ct yellow gold, this gorgeous ring bears a set of Birmingham hallmarks inside the shank dating the ring to year 1870. The Fede design is modeled as two hands as if they were holding the central 'flower' cluster which incorporates purple garnets and little seed pearls. Fede rings (generally two-clasped hands) are an ancient sentimental design often translated to love, marriage and friendship. Similar ring designs was seen in Roman times and the Medieval period from the 12th century. The design remained popular for the next six hundred years, adapting and evolving with varying artistic era styles.
This sweet mid- Victorian design showcases four pretty purple rhodolite garnets and six white seed pearls (likely natural pearls given the date of the ring!) Each stone is placed in a collet setting with fine push-over claws securing the stones, the setting is reasonably low to the finger, making it practical for everyday wear and a closed backside gives a nice smooth feel whilst wearing. A gold scroll embellishes each side edge of the cluster. Textured gold hands depict the flower cluster being delicately held either side. A plain 2.50mm wide shank forms the rest of the ring.
Finger size of the ring measures 8 (USA) or P 1/2 (Aus), great care would be needed if the ring is to be sized.
