A lovely vintage Scottish brooch from the mid 20th century, c1953! Made by Scottish silversmith, Robert Allison, this lovely brooch depicts the Celtic cross symbol and is embellished with decorative Celtic patterns. Taking centre stage is one good-sized natural 25-carat Cairngorm stone of bright yellow brown colour. The stone, also known as Smoky Quartz or Cairngorm Quartz, was likely sourced from Scotland's Cairngorm mountains - hence the name! It rests in a double multi-prong setting which is slightly raised and bordered below with a Celtic patterned frame. A pin and revolver clasp attach to the back.
The brooch bears a crisp set of Glasgow hallmarks dating the piece to year 1953, it is also stamped 'SCOTLAND' and 'RA' denoting maker Robert Allison. Robert Allison was a Scottish silversmith based in Glasgow, first registering his business around 1941. He had a store in Edinburgh and Glasgow, producing a lot of Celtic style jewellery and Victorian Revival pieces which was also exported across the world. His business ceased trading in the early 1980's.
The brooch measures 5cm tip to tip.
