A fabulous antique Montrose agate Scottish brooch hailing from the Victorian era, c1867! Made of sterling silver, this wonderful quatrefoil shaped brooch has a central Saltire (aka St Andrew's cross) design with a crowned top and four Montrose agate segments. The striking cabochon banded blue-gray agate stones originate from Scotland's renowned Montrose agate-bearing coastline in the 19th century. Hence the name of this particular agate that is so unique to this form of agate! The silver surface is adorned with a textural pattern and hand engraving giving further character and detail to this lovely Scottish brooch.

A pin and c-loop closure attach to the back, and there is also the unique lozenge shaped registration mark to the reverse, dating the piece to year 1867. The distinctive mark was used in Britain between 1842 to 1883 and was utilized to show that the design was registered, and to give a precise date of the manufacture.
